How To Teach Students about Data and Analytics
With Anyware’s plug-and-play and ready-to-use classroom sensor, there is no excuse to not start making data-driven decisions about the indoor climate in the classroom – not only about refurbishment plans of the school building, but also about the experienced day-to-day indoor climate in the classroom.
We have learned through some of our school partners that these experienced and very relatable data serve another less tangible purpose, because they are readily available to the students and teachers: They help students understand data, what the data imply and how to work with the data.
All indoor climate data (noise, CO2, temperature, humidity and light level) from the classroom can be viewed in a shared web dashboard and data can be downloaded for further work in Excel or similar.

Empowering Students and Teachers to Take Action

Why should our children wait for a healthy and effective environment for learning in the short, but crucial years in school?
They shouldn’t, of course!
Because there are readily available, affordable, plug-and-play solutions available in the market – and right here – to help ensuring a healthy and effective learning environment through simple, real-time actionable insights in the classroom.
And the fact remains that these real-time actionable insights (data) rarely come from the ventilation system’s sensors. They provide data to the ventilation system’s automation – not to the users of the classroom.
When the ventilation system allegedly ‘works’ as expected, students and teachers oftentimes experience that the classroom is too cold, either because the CO2 sensor is not configured properly to increase the ventilation and students open the windows, or because it has indeed increased the ventilation due to high CO2 levels, but does not consider the temerature drop. This example is merely to illustrate that the ventilation system does not help adapting to changing needs or changes in the classroom environment, but no data would evidence that and help the users of the classroom (students and teachers) to ask for the proper adjustment.

Imagine the healthcare students were taught how to use and analyse data from the digital caregiving tools that they would use as caregivers in the future.
That’s exactly what is happening in schools in Denmark that educate our future healthcare workers and caregivers.
We have measured the impact of linking readily available indoor climate room data (as they reflect non-personal, non-invasive and non-stigmatising well-being data – you can read about the solution here: Anyware SleepWell™) to specific eldercare use-cases, and the results were staggering.
The findings strongly suggest that data tools like Anyware Sense™ should be an integral part of the classroom to teach data and analytics – especially when the data reflect the future work environment of digital caregivers in the future.

Anyware Sense™ (the classroom sensor) is a multi-sensor that seamlessly monitors all the critical sensor values for a healthy and effective learning environment. Several studies point to noise, CO2, temperature and ambient light levels as being the most common and damaging indoor climate problems.
Once plugged in, the classroom sensor will start transmitting the sensor data to the Anyware App™ and Anyware Dashboard™, where you can configure individual alert thresholds for each classroom.
If the noise or CO2 level get too high, the Anyware Sense™ device blink red to alert the teacher and student to take action – and send an alert to the building management team for further action.

We believe in simple, meaningful solutions, so the action based on the alerting in the classroom may be to simply open the window.
It does not have to be an expensive and complex automated system that opens the window and disturbs the teaching, but even the manual action taken must be based on relevant and timely data.

Recent IAQ Research Findings
709 Classrooms in 234 Danish Schools
- In 9 out of 10 classes, the sound pressure exceeds 60 decibels, surpassing the recommended maximum of 50 decibels in a classroom. On average, the noise level in the classroom is 70 decibels
- In over half of the classrooms (53%), CO2 concentrations exceeded the recommended limit set by the Working Environment Authority
- In 18% of the classrooms, these concentrations were more than double the recommended level
- Ventilation improved students’ experience and alleviated their symptoms
- Students made 6% fewer errors in concentration tests after ventilating the classroom
